Spend a Day in the Clifton Gaslight District

Our fair city is really a collection of unique and wonderful neighborhoods. One of the most special of these (in my humble opinion) is Clifton Gaslight. Spend a day there soon; you'll be glad you did!

Just over from the UC campus sits Clifton Gaslight, a vibrant neighborhood atop one of the Queen City's beautiful hills. I called this 'hood home for almost a decade. (So, full disclosure, I might be a bit biased.) It's a walking neighborhood with a bustling business district, ample green space, beautiful homes, and an involved, diverse community of musicians, academics, families, artists, professionals young and old, and all sorts in between.

You will definitely not go hungry in the Gaslight! From the upscale French and American cuisine of La Poste Eatery to hometown classics like Graeter's and Skyline, you can find plenty of eats along Ludlow Avenue.

Love Indian? You're in luck! Three great Indian restaurants call Gaslight home -- Ambar, Amol, and Dusmesh. Crave Mexican? Check out Habanero or neighborhood newcomer Los Potrillos. Want a great breakfast or lunch? Head to the Proud Rooster, Gaslight's classic, family-run greasy spoon. Need pasta? Hit up Biagio's Bistro. Vegetarian? Check out Om Eco Café. (They have great coffee, too!) In the mood for something exotic? Try Marrakech Moroccan Cafe & Grill. Want to cook for yourself? Stop by Clifton Natural Foods for healthy groceries.

For drinks, head to laid-back neighborhood watering hole Arlin's, or hang out and absorb the bohemian vibe at Sitwell's Coffee House. Soon, you'll be able to catch live music at the revamped Ludlow Garage. This place has a storied rock & roll history, by the way. Legends like the Kinks, Iggy Pop, Santana, and many others played here in the '60s & '70s.

Some of my favorite places to hunt for gifts (for others and myself) are the shops along Ludlow Avenue. For vino lovers, hit up Ludlow Wines. Pangaea Trading Company and the Hansa Guild are great for clothes and accessories; Toko Baru offers gorgeous jewelry and home decor. Kilmanjaro sells African art, clothing, and more. At Paolo, you'll find stunning modern fine jewelry. Ace Hardware has lots of good stuff for the gardener or Mr. Fix-It. And for the little ones in your life, head to adorable children's shop Arrietty.

For great style finds for your home, Lentz and Co. is a must. From vintage home goods to retro furniture and local art, they have it all. And if you need flowers, Adrian Durban Florist is one of the best shops in the city.

There's no excuse to be bored in Gaslight! Catch a movie at the Esquire Theatre, a true Cincinnati gem. Get your Om on at It's Yoga or World Peace Yoga. Take in a play at Clifton Performance Theatre. See some art at the Clifton Cultural Arts Center. Head to one of the hood's many parks or green spaces, such as Mt. Storm, Clifton Plaza, Burnet Woods, Rawson Woods, or Dunore Park.

And, guess what, you can do all this on a Cincy Red Bike. There's a station right on Howell Avenue. Pedal safely, enjoy the ride, and have a great day in this treasure of a neighborhood!
