Sip Spotlight: Smoky Backyard Manhattan

The weather is heating up. Time to fire up the grill... and your drink! Here's a complex-but-not-complicated cocktail that the Cocktail Contessa created using Smoked Black Cherry Mixicles — the perfect Manhattan to sip on while grilling.

The hickory in our Smoked Black Cherry cubes combines with the bitterness of the amaro to bring out the subtle spice notes of the whiskey. If you use a whiskey with cherry notes, you’ll pull that flavor through the drink.

Can you make this drink without thawing the Mixicles cube? Certainly! It just means you’ve got a cocktail that evolves as you sip, which is kind of our thing. Smoked Black Cherry Mixicles are found in our Distinctive Collection.

I'll be featuring this yummy cocktail at an event this Thursday I'm hosting with the Bourbon Women Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati. This tasting event includes cocktails, snacks, and a hands-on bourbon cocktail-crafting “mixperience” with Mixicles. The event is 5:30-7pm July 22 at Findlay Kitchen, located at 1719 Elm Street downtown. The deadline to get tickets is July 20 at 6pm. Click here to learn more about it and register!

SMOKY BACKYARD MANHATTAN

Ingredients:

  • 1 Smoked Black Cherry Mixicles cube
  • 1 ounce amaro
  • 2 ounces bourbon (or rye for a spicier kick)
  • Luxardo cherries and orange peel for garnish (optional)

Directions:

Let the Mixicles cube thaw a little, and then add it, the amaro, and the whiskey to a mixing glass, fill with ice, and stir for 30 seconds. Strain into a glass and top with cherries and an orange peel. Turn the burgers one last time. Sip.
