MA Monday: Benefits of Living Wall, Green Roof Design

Meet Ally Balmer, Project Coordinator on the sustainability team at MA Design in Cincinnati (click to watch the video above).

Balmer shares that green roofs and living walls have three key benefits:

1. Storm Water Management: Green roofs and living walls help filter and retain water, lessening the load on the storm water systems and sewers. They also benefit the built environment so that excess water does not go into homes or businesses. Lastly, the green roof and living water systems filter out pollutants, ultimately protecting our local waterways.

2. Temperature Reduction and Air Quality: Urban Heat Island Effect explains the concept that in large cities outside temperature is higher. Green roofs and living walls aid in the cooling of temperature, so that all the heat is not bouncing off roofs.

3. Energy Use Reduction: The cooling properties from green roofs and living walls cuts the cost in utilities by cutting a load off of an HVAC system.
