Five Local Ways to Celebrate Earth Day

KY Botanical Co.

Keep it simple. That's the idea behind Kentucky Botanical Co., which started as an education focused distributor of high quality, Kentucky grown hemp products, and just launched its first refillery expansion in March.

The Kentucky Botanical Co. features both Full and Broad Spectrum CBD oils, gummies, edibles, topical creams, and an increasingly popular Delta 8 lineup. These hemp products are derived through clean, Earth-friendly extraction methods, while keeping quality and purity as the focus. Hemp is naturally a great friend to our Earth, needing no pesticides for growth, having the potential to produce more oxygen than trees, or by being nature's own purifier--the plant rapidly captures carbon dioxide, making the air we breathe much cleaner.

The "Refilled at Kentucky Botanical Co." refillery launched as a natural progression of their earth-friendly hemp product line. Because being perfectly zero waste is hard to wrap your head around and can be discouraging, they take a progress-not-perfection approach. From the beginner to expert at low waste living, they have a growing list of products for everyone and you can refill by bringing your own containers or grabbing one from the shop.

There are four Kentucky Botanical Co. locations: Bellevue, KY; Covington (Mainstrasse), KY; Florence, KY; and Centerville, OH. Currently, Refilled is only available at the Bellevue and Mainstrasse locations, but coming soon to Florence, KY.

The Bloom Hive

Flowers spark joy. That’s what led Ashley Balzer to create The Bloom Hive, a Cincinnati mom of a four year old who has loved finding and pressing flowers since she was little.

“I’m inspired and motivated by the spark of joy a flower can bring, the memories that a single bloom can hold and found vintage floral pressings,” she says.

The Bloom Hive offers one-of-a-kind pressed floral, greenery, citrus, and other natural elements in hand-crafted floating frames for walls or tabletop decor and gifts. They also do custom preserved pieces like memorial pressings, wedding bouquet pressings, and seasonal charms and ornaments.

Ashley says her busiest time of year is Spring, not only because she’s busy pressing all the pretty blooms she can find, but also because The Bloom Hive makes a pretty special Mother’s Day gift. “A bloom from her favorite kind of flower, or a leaf from a tree outside your childhood home, or wildflowers a grandchild picked. I get so many orders with warm memories and history behind them, it's really rewarding to create something I know a mom will cherish,” she says.

Plaine Products

On a mission to eliminate single-use plastic from the bathroom, Plaine Products offers a line of toxin-free personal care products. But here's the best part: they come in aluminum bottles that can be sent back and refilled time after time. It's like a refillery that comes to your doorstep.

You can select whether you want to purchase each item once, or set an individualized subscription timeframe. And since Plaine Products are toxin free you can share them with your whole family. No harsh ingredients means no tears.

Based in Cincinnati, OH, and founded in 2017, Plaine Products was founded by two sisters who are passionate about stopping the spread of single-use plastics. They’ve been featured in Forbes, Good Housekeeping, Elle, The Huffington Post and many other national publications. They’re also now a BCorp (a new kind of business that balances purpose and profit) and a member of 1% for the Planet.

Plaine Products' line ranges from shampoo and conditioner, body wash and lotion, hand sanitizer and a full line of face care including face wash, beauty oil, toner and moisturizer. They also have travel size and gift sets. All products are vegan, non-GMO, cruelty-free, biodegradable, color-safe and free of parabens, sulfates and toxins, good for the body and the planet.

Green Bee Ohio

At Green Bee, their mantra is simple: Clean products for a clean planet. Their all-natural, plant-based skincare and eco-conscious home goods help make it easy to purchase with purpose.

"We love our planet and want to preserve the natural spaces in our world for future generations," says owner Emily Hoskins. "That's why we donate generously to organizations who support the preservation and protection of the Earth we share."

As the Green Bee name suggests, bees — and other pollinators — are a central part of how they help. "Insects are the foundation of life on our planet; we depend on their success for our own human existence. Think about it: Do you enjoy coffee, wine, chocolate, apple pie, strawberry shortcake, almond butter, hummus, ice cream, avocado toast? All of the above? If we lose the pollination services provided by these tiny wonders, we would lose more than 75% of the world's crops. This is why we work hard to curate our product offerings to support the people who are in it with us."

At Green Bee, Hoskins says, no single act of conservation is too small to be celebrated. "Replace that plastic straw with a metal one, use a Swedish dishcloth instead of a roll of paper towels, pamper yourself with our pineapple Facial Mask and feel great about it!"

Green Bee’s product line includes a facial cleanser and moisturizer, skin serums, a facial mask, all-natural cosmetics, a hemp-derived muscle rub and facial serum, bath bombs, and several home products like compostable dishcloths, candles, bee hive kits and more.

Hoskins encourages you to post your #onesmallact to social media and tag @greenbeeohio for a chance to win one of their compostable dishcloths. Visit the Green Bee website to shop their current line and read the conservation blog here.

Cincinnati Maintenance

Spring is officially here, which may have you itching to do some Spring cleaning. But not all "cleans" are created equal. Some cleaners - especially carpet cleaners - have chemicals that are harmful for you, kids, pets and the planet. That's where Cincinnati Maintenance can help.

Cincinnati Maintenance only uses green cleaning solutions and processes. They also help to educate clients — in both commercial and residential settings — on safe cleaning practices, maintenance and green building materials.

"We're on the forefront of using green technology and safe chemistry to provide the healthiest possible environment," says owner, Eddie Susshine. "We only green certified cleaning products, and we use 90% less water during cleanings which means a very fast dry time."

And they don’t just clean carpets. Cincinnati Maintenance also cleans rugs, upholstery, tile and grout. Plus, they offer floor buffing and scrubbing, dryer vent cleaning, as well as tile stripping and waxing services.
