Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States and former Civil War general, was born nearly 200 years ago in a one-room cottage 25 miles southeast of Cincinnati in a town called Point Pleasant. The house is an active museum with information about Grant as well as genuine artifacts from his life. The museum is open to the public from May to September (and by appointment year-round). The James A. Garfield National Historic Site in Mentor, OH is managed by Cuyahoga Valley National Park and located about 4 hours north of Cincinnati. The site offers visitors the opportunity to learn more about the Garfield story through guided tours, Ranger-led extended tours, virtual group tours, and cell phone tours for a socially distant experience. The James A. Garfield National Historic Site is open from November to April on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 10 AM to 5 PM. From May to October, the site is open daily from 10 AM to 5 PM. The Visitor Center offers museum exhibits chronicling the life of the 20th U.S. president, James A. Garfield, from childhood to his time in the Oval Office. Though there are no crops or livestock anymore, visitors have the opportunity to walk the grounds and explore what remains of the Garfields' 160-acre farm. Located in Marion, OH, just two and a half hours from Cincinnati, the former residence of Warren G. and Florence Harding has been open continuously as a museum since 1926. For the first forty years, visitors could only view four rooms of the 29th U.S. president’s home before the space was transformed into a house museum and gift shop. ADDRESS: 380 Mt. The Spiegel Grove Estate houses the Rutherford B. Hayes Museum Library and 31-room mansion, alongside 25 acres of green space and the burial sites of both President and Mrs. Hayes. In 1846, Rutherford B. Hayes inherited the wooded property before spending the next 30 years drawing up plans and remodeling both interior and exterior features. Hayes loved his home and estate and particularly enjoyed the wrap-around veranda, of which he was quoted saying, “The best part of the present house is the veranda. But I would enlarge it. Located in Fremont, OH (about three hours from Cincinnati), both the estate and home of the 19th U.S. president are open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays with admission rates running between $5 and $20, depending on age. The museum uses its 52,000+ square feet and additional resources to illustrate the lives of Rutherford and Lucy Hayes, their family, and their rich history in Ohio. Benjamin and Caroline Harrison built their 16-room Italianate Victorian home in 1875 where the 23rd U.S. President lived until he passed in 1901, with the exception of his U.S. Senate and presidential years. The home is located just two hours west of Cincinnati in Indianapolis, Indiana’s Old Northside neighborhood.
