Sara’s House is a hip boutique busting at the seams with local gifts, handcrafted light fixtures, and everything else you’d expect at a trendy new shop in OTR.
However, it’s not in OTR. It’s located in downtown Hamilton, Ohio.
A labor of love and the result of a lifetime of antiquing and repurposing, Sara’s House is reason enough to make a trip to nearby Hamilton. Owner Sara Vallandingham and Dave, her husband, started their “picking” when they lived in Nashville. Their eye for style eventually brought them to a forgotten corner building in Hamilton, a city hungry for revival.
It was a perfect marriage; and in 2014, Sara’s House opened at its current location. Together, the Vallandinghams completely remodeled their corner building and turned the top floors into a stylish loft that’d make any fan of exposed brick and handsome wooden floors drool. On the first floor, Sara filled her shop with unique lighting fixtures (most of which are made by Dave), repurposed antiques, and plenty of local goods.
Walking into Sara’s House is always a treat as the inventory constantly changes. The warm, inviting store is filled with the fresh scent of locally-sourced candles and soaps, and also features its original tin ceiling. It’s the kind of shop that'd easily be considered a standout in a trendy neighborhood in a big city, and Sara’s House is adding to Hamilton's revitalization by being just that.
Since their grand opening in May of 2014, plenty of neighbors have filled the spaces around them with everything from a brewery to a bakery to a candy store. What was once an almost abandoned stretch of downtown Hamilton is now a tourist destination, thanks in part to the vision of Sara and Dave Vallandingham's endeavor.
