Hear ye, hear ye! It’s that time of year (no, not pumpkin spice season). It’s time for the annual return of the Ohio Renaissance Festival in Harveysburg, OH!
Taking place between Labor Day and the end of October, the trip back to 16th century England is worth the 45-minute drive to the fairgrounds. They’re not too strict on being historically accurate, though; you’ll witness Queen Elizabeth I watching a jousting match alongside pirates, barbarians, princesses, steampunks, and more.
The 30-acre festival grounds boast plenty to do. Endless shops selling weapons, chainmail, costumes, trinkets, and other odds and ends dot the landscape while snack stands offer everything from pumpkin spice funnel cakes to the classic giant turkey leg (a Ren Fest staple).
OTHER YE OLDE REN FEST ACTIVITIES:
- Have your fortune told
- Ride on a giant swing shaped like a dragon
- Be knighted by the Queen
- Learn archery
- People-watch in a beer garden while listening to lute music
- Personal favorite: Throw tomatoes at a jester as he hurls insults back at you
It’s not hard to spend a few hours entertaining yourself, but the shows are the real highlight. There’s the totally-epic championship jousting matches (those guys are really using giant wooden poles to knock each other off real, live horses), comedy routines, sword fights, and more. With over 100 events, performances, and demonstrations going on any given day at 11 different stage areas, to say that there’s a lot happening is kind of an understatement.
So, put on your finest pantaloons, grab a flagon of Guinness and a giant turkey leg, and have a good time at the Ohio Renaissance Festival while you still can!
The Ohio Renaissance Festival, which runs every Saturday and Sunday from September 3 to October 23, is located at 10542 East State Route 73, Waynesville, OH 45068.
