Nothing says summer like a wave pool.
Nothing, that is, except two wave pools, together with rivers, water slides, roller coasters, children’s rides, animal shows, and a host of other offerings that’ll have you and your family occupied from the moment you arrive until the moment your head hits the pillow.
I’m talking, of course, about Kentucky Kingdom & Hurricane Bay, an amusement park that punches well above its weight class. Located about 90 minutes southwest of Cincinnati, it’s far enough that it still satisfies the criteria of a family getaway, but close enough that you won’t hear too many “Are we there yet?”s en route.
Once you get there, it’s all about the fun. Kentucky Kingdom & Hurricane Bay features more than 70 rides and attractions, with some coming online just in the past few years. That includes Storm Chaser, the park’s fifth world-class roller coaster, as well as Eye of the Storm, a high-speed ride that’ll leave you jelly-legged.
As for what’s in store for 2018, Kentucky Kingdom & Hurricane Bay has an outstanding lineup of new options:
(More) Fun in the Shade
Kentucky Kingdom’s wave pools are already the most fun you’ll have riding out the heat of summer. Big Surf, the larger of the two, features six-feet waves generated in a 750,000-gallon wave pool. And now you and your family can enjoy them from the spacious and shaded comfort of a cabana. Private rentals can accommodate a family of four the entire day start at $99.
Two new rides have been added for 2018. The first, Rock ’n’ Roller, is a family friendly spin-about. The other, Scream Extreme, looks a bit like an enormous spinning roulette board—and you’re on whirling around at the edges.
Food and Craft Beer
Amusement park food isn’t anything special, right? Wrong, especially since Kentucky Kingdom & Hurricane Bay now has a Craft Beer Garden where you’ll be able to order burgers and wings and, of course, craft beer. You’ll also be able to order bourbon flights, which explains why Kentucky Kingdom & Hurricane Bay is considered an unofficial stop on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail!
As for the new food options, you can get warm, scrumptious pretzels at Sweet ’n’ Salty and delicious hand-dipped ice cream at Scoops. They join a jam-packed roster of restaurants serving everything from tacos to pizza to slushes.
Too hot out there for you? Take a break for one of Kentucky Kingdom & Hurricane Bay’s two new shows in the 5D Cinema, which offers an amazingly interactive theatre-going experience. The shows are Happy Family, a fun animated adventure, and Journey to the Center of the Earth, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. (Enough said.)
Ok, this isn’t new in 2018, but it might just be the reason you go. If you live outside Kentucky you can get in the park for just $39.95. And if you decide to come back for a second day—and why wouldn’t you with hotel rates from $65/night?—you can get in for free!
So come on down to Kentucky Kingdom & Hurricane Bay for some unbeatable fun under the sun. It’s sure to be the best family getaway of the summer.
