50 years ago, Americans landed on the moon and made history. Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission compiles over 20 authentic artifacts from the mission, including the actual Apollo 11 command module Columbia, deep within the Cincinnati Museum Center. The exhibition takes a look at the history of the first lunar landing, as well as the years leading up to the fateful Apollo 11 mission and the thousands of people at NASA who made it a reality. Destination Moon is scheduled to remain at the Museum Center until February 17, 2020. MUSEUM ADDRESS: 1301 Western Ave (45203) / Image: Phil Armstrong, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 10.2.19
Destination Moon is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) and the National Air and Space Museum. This traveling exhibit marks the first time since 1976 that the command module, which housed all three astronauts during takeoff and reentry, has left the National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC. It is the only remaining piece of space craft recovered and preserved from the mission. / Image: Phil Armstrong, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 10.2.19
Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins were the three astronauts who successfully completed the Apollo 11 mission. Armstrong and Aldrin stepped foot on the moon while Collins stayed in orbit in the command module. The three were regarded as heroes when they were recovered from the Pacific Ocean after returning to Earth. / Image: Phil Armstrong, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 10.2.19
An OMNIMAX film plays concurrent to the exhibition. Apollo 11: First Steps Edition reveals never-before-seen 70mm footage of the moon landing, offering a fresh look at the historic event. In addition to the film and Destination Moon, museum-goers can check out the permanent Neil Armstrong Space Exploration Gallery on the same floor as the traveling exhibition. There, Armstrong's original communications caps, inflight jacket, and an actual moon rock are on display. / Image: Phil Armstrong, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 10.2.19
Buzz Aldrin wore this outer helmet and these gloves while on the moon. Both pieces were designed to protect Aldrin from the unfiltered light from the sun while also providing a way for the astronaut to safely interact with the moon. / Image: Phil Armstrong, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 10.2.19
This F-1 engine injector plate was part of the first-stage engines that launched the Apollo 11 crew into space. This specific piece was lost at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean for 44 years before it was recovered in 2013. It weighs 1,200 lbs. / Image: Phil Armstrong, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 10.2.19
The Apollo 11 command module Columbia is the most notable piece of the collection. This piece of equipment safely housed all three astronauts during takeoff, travel, and reentry, and was recovered from the Pacific Ocean along with Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins when they returned to Earth. It hasn't left DC since 1976, but is now part of the traveling Destination Moon exhibition. You can see this extraordinary piece of history at the Cincinnati Museum Center until February 17, 2020. / Image: Phil Armstrong, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 10.2.19
