In the Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest two hours south of Cincinnati, Danish artist Thomas Dambo erected a family of giant troll structures. The sculptures—Mama Loumari and her two children, Little Nis and Little Elina—were crafted from recycled and repurposed wood that even included material from the nearby Louisville Slugger Factory. Weather permitting, the art installation should last a total of three years. Bernheim Forest is located 30 miles south of Louisville. ADDRESS: 2075 Clermont Road, Clermont, KY (40110) / Image: Mike Menke // Published: 4.23.19
The statues were revealed in late March 2019 to celebrate the arboretum’s 90th anniversary. So many people came to see it after its unveiling during spring break, administrators at Bernheim had to close briefly during one of the days. It broke the ‘one day’ visitors record with over 12,000 visitors flocking to the park. A nearby highway was also at a massive standstill with traffic from eager sight-seers. / Image: Mike Menke // Published: 4.23.19{ }
Thomas Dambo is also known for a similar wooden giant he constructed in Breckenridge, Colorado called Isak Heartstone. The 15-foot troll was designed for a summer arts festival there. / Image: Mike Menke // Published: 4.23.19
Aside from gazing at giant trolls, Bernheim guests can discover other art displays throughout the park, enjoy over 40 miles of scenic hiking and biking trails, try out the edible garden, visit a Visitor Center with Isaac’s Café inside, attend seasonal events, and participate in educational and research projects on the grounds and in the Education Center. The site is considered a “living laboratory” when it comes to learning about the best practices for environmental protection and conservation. / Image: Mike Menke // Published: 4.23.19{ }
