Mande Goods in Madisonville offers a unique selection of African home goods, crafts, and accessories. Everything from the Tuareg jewelry to the decorative leather boxes is handcrafted by artisans in Mali in West Africa. Owner Ali Coulibaly, originally from Mali, has lived in many parts of Africa and is happy to share interesting facts about the background and cultural significance behind the pieces. ADDRESS: 5901 Bramble Avenue (45227) / Image: Katie Robinson, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 1.4.20
“I grew up with a lot of art because my dad was a collector,” Ali says. His mom also had a background in interior design. “As I grew up, it was all about decorating the house with different colors, different masks—so I’ve always been around that.” Ali moved to Portland in 2008 but later transferred to Cincinnati to attend NKU where he focused on international studies and entrepreneurship. / Image: Katie Robinson, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 1.4.20
“I only carry items that have been handmade, and I really go with a lot of product that is natural,” Ali says. These mud cloths are known as bogolanfini in Mali. With ‘bogo’ meaning mud and ‘fini’ meaning cloth, the color in the fabrics are created using ancient techniques involving dried leaves, clay, and other plant-based and natural resources. They feature a variety of colors that carry symbolic meanings, representing themes like family and wealth in their patterns. Ali has also given his own designs to African artists to make pillows and prints for Mande Goods. / Image: Katie Robinson, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 1.4.20
You can always expect to find something new when you visit the shop, as Ali’s collection is made up of one-of-a-kind pieces that circulate regularly. He opened Mande Goods’ doors in late November of 2020.
