Kirk & Company Jewelers is a third-generation business located in Downtown Milford. They specialize in goldsmithing, diamond setting, jewelry repair, resizing, and custom jewelry design that they produce in-house right behind the counter. Joe Kirk is the owner of the family-owned and operated shop, which he runs with his stepsons, Brandon and Josh Colon, by his side. Dan & Rose Kirk founded the business, which was originally named Cincinnati Goldsmiths, Inc, Downtown in 1986. The trade shop accepted work from many local jewelry stores throughout the Tri-state. They eventually moved the business to Batesville, IN, renamed it Kirk & Company, and expanded it into a retail business. Dan had over 40 years of experience behind the bench and was known for his attention to detail and remarkable goldsmithing skills. He passed away in November 2019. / Image: Katie Robinson, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 1.27.21
Joe Kirk, Dan & Roses’s son, joined the business in 2001 and began training as a goldsmith. He took over as the owner in 2007, which is when he moved the business to its current location in the historic downtown district of Milford. He leads the business as head diamond setter, hand engraver, and diamond and gemstone broker with over 20 years of goldsmith and diamond setting experience. / Image: Katie Robinson, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 1.27.21
Following along with the family tradition, Joe has trained his two stepsons in the jewelry trade, as well. Brandon Colon serves as the sales manager, a jewelry designer, and junior diamond and gemstone broker. He also handles the social media and online marketing. Josh Colon apprenticed under his dad and grandma as a goldsmith, diamond setter, and jewelry designer for Kirk & Co. He heads the jewelry repair and jewelry fabricators services for the business, too. / Image: Katie Robinson, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 1.27.21

Joe made this purple tanzanite necklace for a customer completely by hand. It features 154 diamonds and a challenging style. He says the shape was somewhat inspired by a rocking horse. / Image: Katie Robinson, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 1.27.21

The team is passionate about bringing a customer’s idea for an engagement ring or other piece of jewelry to life, forming it into a truly one-of-a-kind piece. They do this by blending traditional jewelry fabrication methods with new technology such as CAD programs to develop 3D images of the design. Once the digital renderings are created, they use 3D printers to make wax models of the piece that will allow them to see what it will look like, and then construct it from there. / Image: Katie Robinson, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 1.27.21

Aside from engagement rings, necklaces, and other pieces that are custom-made, they also carry various, top-quality brands of watches and rings including Versace, Bulova, Gabriel & Co., and more. / Image: Katie Robinson, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 1.27.21
Jewelry-making is something Joe grew up with. He says he’d get picked up from pre-school, tune in to “The Andy Griffith Show”, and then head down to the basement where he’d watch his dad use fun torches and hammers to make incredible pieces. It wasn’t hard to spark his interest in the craft. His stepsons followed suit and found enjoyment in jewelry, as well. Joe says he loves watching them enhance and evolve the business, and that having a multi-generational influence has been a major advantage.{ }/ Image: Katie Robinson, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 1.27.21

The business places a big focus on customer service. The friendly and experienced jewelers are more than happy to engage in conversation with guests to answer any jewelry-related questions or requests, or teach them something new about jewelry and how it’s made. / Image: Katie Robinson, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 1.27.21

Joe says his favorite part of the business is “creating something with someone”, explaining that there’s always a story and a lot of emotion behind each piece he makes. While the day-to-day operations consist of loud noises and an overall hustle and bustle in the shop, he says, “The best sound in jewelry is when [a customer] is speechless,” referring to their reaction when they come back to pick up their custom piece. / Image: Katie Robinson, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 1.27.21

Building a ring for an engagement or anniversary is one of their most popular services. They offer both natural and lab-made diamonds, which are physically, chemically, and optically the same. Joe says they’ve even made custom pieces out of unconventional items like an elk tooth gem stone, a grandpa’s winning poker chip, and other items of nostalgic value to a customer. / Image: Katie Robinson, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 1.27.21
