Cincinnati’s most popular comedy venue, Go Bananas Comedy Club, also happens to be its most intimate. That’s certainly no accident, as it’s the low ceilings, brick backstop, and immediacy of the crowd noise that keeps comedians returning year after year.
Those comedians number amateur humorists like you and me, peddlers of knock-knock jokes, armpit farts, and wry observations about modern life. But they’ve also included professionals like Dave Chappelle, Jim Gaffigan, Louis C.K., and Mitch Hedberg.
Big names for sure, though they shouldn’t surprise you. After all, Go Bananas isn't just the most popular comedy spot in Cincinnati, it's also among the best in the nation.
CINCINNATI’S FAVORITE COMEDY CLUB
Go Bananas sits in a, shall we say, mixed-use development off Montgomery Road. It’s next to a bar, McLevy’s Pub, whose $2 Miller Lites I can personally vouch for.
As for the club itself, there isn’t a lot to its exterior, save for the large banana cutout. Its innards are similarly modest. The club is somewhat reminiscent of, though undisputedly better than, an unfinished basement.
But that's all part of what makes Go Bananas great. Indeed, comedy thrives in places of minimal pretension, where there’s nothing to divide artist from audience and together you can marinate in the strangeness of life — be it in an unfinished basement or otherwise.
Without a doubt, something special does happen during a Go Bananas show to make the audience, well, go bananas. Maybe it's the booze. Maybe it's the ridiculously delicious chicken fingers. But maybe it's something else, too.
Regardless, if you like comedy (heck, even if you don't), it’s definitely worth checking out.
