Bender Mountain Preserve makes up more than 50 acres of wooded hillside that sits between Bender Road and Hillside Avenue in Delhi Township. The Western Wildlife Corridor maintains the area, which features over three miles of hiking trails ranging in difficulty. It also includes fantastic Ohio River views as well as a long-ago abandoned stretch of Delhi Pike. ADDRESS: 6320-6468 Bender Road (45233) / Image: Catherine Viox // Published: 8.7.2
Located off of U.S. Route 50, there are various options for parking. The Bender Road Gravel Lot sits north of the preserve where you’ll find access to the Bender Valley Trail and Eagle Scout Trail. Parking at the dead-end of Delhi Avenue (east side of the preserve) is another option and offers access to the Sister’s Hill Trail. / Image: Catherine Viox // Published: 8.7.20
The restored nature preserve is heavily wooded and home to hundreds of plant and animal species. While hiking, you can expect to see some of the best native wildflowers in the area. / Image: Catherine Viox // Published: 8.7.20
Other than scenic river sightings, trail-goers may also stumble upon a creek bed with some shallow swimming holes, as well as the Darby Lee Cemetery—the resting place for some of Delhi’s earliest residents. Some of the graves date back over 150 years. / Image: Catherine Viox // Published: 8.7.20
The trails are open to foot (and paw) traffic only, as dogs are permitted, but bikes, horses, and other motorized vehicles are not. Some sections of the trails can be quite challenging with steep slopes and uneven/rocky steps to climb. It’s also important to note that the trails get especially slippery after a rain. / Image: Catherine Viox // Published: 8.7.20
