Rookwood Athleta Got the Community Together to Run the Circumference of the Earth

In the Queen City, there’s no shortage of run clubs or race opportunities. But our local Athleta stores transformed the average run club into a chance to change the world one mile at a time.

Athleta’s “Race for the Planet” Run Club challenged its nationwide community to run the total circumference of the earth.

That’s 24,901 miles.

Every Wednesday in August, the Cincinnati team gathered for a group 5K, and for every mile run, walked, or biked, Athleta donated $1 to The Nature Conservancy.

In addition to the free running group led by Queen Bee Ambassador, Theresa Salerno, Flexologists from Stretch Lab also offered assistance in stretching before and after the run. Nia Dauche, the track and field coach at Clark Montessori, led a core session after every run, as well.

Whole Foods Rookwood had healthy snacks at the ready, while mission-based organizations like The Aruna Project and Girls on the Run were in attendance to share their products and services. Plus, weekly giveaways and raffles provided an extra motivator to get moving.

“My goal for the team was to run 1,000 miles,” said Kristen Gallagher, Athleta Rookwood’s Community Coordinator. “We ended up logging 2,107 miles.”

The club was so successful, that Athleta Rookwood plans to continue the weekly community run for like-minded, charity-focused people. Athleta Rookwood will continue to meet every Wednesday for the community run. Though the store will no longer donate $1 per mile, the Charity Miles app will allow you to donate to the cause that matters to you with every mile you move, earning money from their corporate sponsors.

“We want to unite the community and ignite a greater purpose for wellness for all,” says Gallagher. “People want to get behind a purpose but don’t know where to begin. Athleta is trying to create that opportunity.”
