You want wings on the West Side? You only have a few options.
Alas, one of them is national chain Bee-Dubs. True, it might have been your favorite wingery in college. And true, it might still charm you with its readymade-ness. But you’re not in college anymore, and their wings fall short in every way. (As, unconscionably, do the mozzarella sticks.)
Where then shall you go? Try Wild Mike’s. It has three convenient locations, each serving up a menu of delicious bar food including some knockout wings.
Now, as you may have discerned, Wild Mike’s is indeed a chain. But those three convenient locations are it. They’re all on the West Side and owned by the same guy, making Wild Mike’s one of those humble, local-only chains peculiar to Cincinnati.
But let’s dispense with all that, because only one thing matters here—the wings. And not their bake or their plumpness, though in both respects they’re far superior to the aforementioned. No, what matters are the sauces, and Wild Mike’s has 35 of them.
Well, sort of. In truth there are seven flavors: buffalo, ginger teriyaki, garlic, Mike’s mix, parmesan garlic, Kansas City bbq, and Carolina gold.
But for each of those flavors you must also specify a temperature: mild, medium, hot, xtra hot, and stupid hot. Mild, for your reference, is the flavor equivalent of a bunny munching on a carrot on a sunny day, while stupid hot has more in common with drinking from the wrong cup at the end of Indiana Jones and the Holy Grail. (“It would not be made of gold.”)
Incidentally, my wing of choice is made of gold—Carolina gold, xtra hot. The sauce has mustard and vinegar, and it trumps your tomato-based swill in nearly every way. (Kidding, sort of.)
That, at any rate, is how we get to 35 sauces. We get to 70 with the introduction of boneless wings. We get to 140 with the option to go sauce-crazy. That is, you can order your wings xtra wet, which is exactly what it sounds like.
And if you don’t like wings, there are plenty of other menu options. There are salads, burgers, chicken sandwiches, double-deckers, full dinners, and an array of awesomely fried appetizers.
They also have mozzarella sticks. And, true to form for Wild Mike’s, they’re exactly how they should be.
