The Fringe Coffee House, located in Hamilton, is a café that not only serves coffee, smoothies, and light breakfast and lunch items, but one that’s also dedicated to empowering ex-inmates, felons, and people on the fringe of society to better their lives. The owners’ mission is to offer mentorship to incarcerated individuals and opportunities for them to work at the café upon their release, all in an effort to create a supportive plan for re-entry into society. In order to provide holistic stability for people post-incarceration, The Fringe offers a one-year paid job training and re-entry program. These programs are custom designed with counseling, mentoring, classes centered around parenting or obtaining a GED, and opportunities to connect with a community of faith. / Image: Kellie Coleman // Published: 11.24.20

Some of their other initiatives include an eight-week prison music therapy program that helps get to the root causes of someone’s incarceration and destructive behavior. These programs help to build kinship and provide support and structure for participants. They also host AA and NA meetings in the shop’s creative arts space upstairs. / Image: Kellie Coleman // Published: 11.24.20

Youth courses revolved around music, art, photography, and video are also available in the creative arts space of the café as a story-telling outlet for at-risk kids in the neighborhood. They can learn instruments, music production, photo editing, and more from local artists and instructors who can instill a positive influence on the kids that could help prevent them from ending up in the prison system. / Image: Kellie Coleman // Published: 11.24.20
