Historic West Fourth Street jumps further into the 21st Century with the addition of Rebel Mettle Brewery, a new craft brewery located on the corner of Central Avenue and Perry Street in Downtown Cincinnati. According to President & CEO Mike Brown, the brewery intends to contend directly with the likes of Anheuser-Busch InBev by focusing on lager production instead of ales. The process of opening Rebel Mettle took five years from start to finish. Mike Brown, President & CEO of the brewery, is a US Airforce veteran who served for 12 years. After leaving the military, he spent time in corporate America, but wasn't satisfied with his career path. Having brewed beer at home since 2009, he decided to talk to Greg Goeke (VP of Operations) and Duane Donohoo (CFO) about opening their own brewery. "We have PhDs in perseverance," Mike jokes. / Image: Phil Armstrong, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 10.21.20
There are three flagship beers at this time: Stubentiger, described as a "crushable lager with the purrfect blend of drinkability and flavor"; Mettle Mayhem, described as an "IPL (India Pale Lager) full of mischief and mystery"; and Volume, a "German-style dark beer packed with high frequency juniper berry notes that will amplify on occasion." You can get all three in the taproom along with several other IPAs, pilsners, stouts, and more. / Image: Phil Armstrong, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 10.21.20

The inside of the brewery has a raw, industrial aesthetic. The building was originally built in 1925 as a parking garage with a massive elevator that would lift and lower cars to their desired floor. Today, the former garage houses all of Rebel Mettle's production as well as two stories of seating and free-to-play retro games, like pinball and skeeball. A horseshoe bar sits in the middle of the first floor, and a mezzanine with perimeter seating and a satellite bar occupies the second floor. / Image: Phil Armstrong, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 10.21.20
Drawing Dept, the architect, was tapped to redesign the space for the brewery. The Loring Group was the General Contractor. / Image: Phil Armstrong, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 10.21.20
