What sets HighGrain Brewing Company apart from other breweries is their total commitment to being sustainable. Their energy is 100 percent wind-powered, all the lights are LEDs, and the beer and food ingredients are locally sourced whenever possible. Their Norwegian Table Ale is even carbon-neutral, where the carbon dioxide created in making the beer is offset by planting trees in Peruvian rain forests. They also installed a geothermal HVAC system that uses 14 water wells that pump water up to a heat exchanger to maintain the building’s temperature, which saves energy. The family-friendly spot also keeps things local when it comes to their food menu, which includes a kids’ section as well as vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options. The pub’s food is matched to pair with the season’s beer menu. The brewery is open Monday-Thursday 11 AM-11 PM, Friday and Saturday 11 AM-12 AM, and Sunday 11 AM-9 PM. / Image courtesy of HighGrain Brewing Company // Published: 7.16.19
The Silverton community welcomed the brewery with open arms, even giving up their former municipal building—which served the as the community’s city offices since 1951—to accommodate the sustainable brewing endeavor. HighGrain Brewing has transformed the front lawn into a small beer garden where police and village officials once passed through to go to work. The new town hall down the road installed a similar geothermal HVAC system to be more environmentally conscious, too. / Image: Chez Chesak // Published: 7.16.19
