As kids, all we wanted to do was skip dinner in order to eat dessert.
As adults, not much has changed… except we have slightly more willpower. (Maybs.)
Then again, we’re the adults now.
We’re in charge of what we do, eat, and wear.
Mom can’t force us to eat our veggies any longer. (Muahahaha.)
(**Full disclosure: This story is in no way endorsing a lifestyle of bad eating habits. Okay, now that we got that out of the way, let’s get to the fun stuff.)
Ben Arington loved baked goods as a kid. I mean, he really loved them. He loved ‘em so much, in fact, that he’s turned that love into a full-time gig.
Let us introduce you to Fat Ben’s Bakery, which officially came online in January 2016.
Cincinnati Refined: What’s your motto?
Ben Arington: Just making the world a better place one pastry at a time
CR: What’s the most popular item on the menu?
BA: At the moment, it would have to be the pastry pockets. Cookies N’ Cream and Blackberry Thyme are the ones that keep getting ordered regularly.
CR: What’s your favorite item on the menu? Second to that, what was your favorite pastry growing up?
BA: The homemade s’mores would be my favorite thing I offer. I just love marshmallows. My favorite thing growing up would probably have to be Pineapple Upside Down Cake. Even to this day, it’s one of my favorites.
CR: This is only an online bakery, correct?
BA: It is. Everything I make is done the same day. I ensure quality ingredients and nothing ever gets frozen. And you are able to purchase my products at Bloc Coffee in Price Hill, Urbana Café, and Lot #1 in Lebanon.
CR: What’s your 6-month, 1-year-, and 5-year plan for the bakery?
BA: Well, I’ve already reached my 6-month goal, just by staying open and making a little bit of money. My 1-year goal is to finally have a storefront. I’ve been searching for a few places, and I think I’ve found one. But it’s staying under wraps for now. My 5-year goal is hoping that I won’t have to be doing these 14-hour days anymore. I would like to be able to train other enthusiastic chefs.
CR: Fill in the blank: The best thing to eat with a French macaron is ______.
BA: Homemade Ice Cream. I love French Macaron Ice Cream Sandwiches.
CR: Are you doing all the baking, or do you have a small army helping you?
BA: I wish I had a small army. It would make my days go much quicker. But it’s just me. Well, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, and I. Those guys help me get through the days.
CR: Why do you think your baked goods stand out from other bakeries?
BA: Well, my work is exciting. I like big and bold colors. Everybody eats with their eyes first. I just try to make my pastries eye popping.
CR: These last questions are more of a fun, random game/ activity. Just fill in the blank
