The bar was developed by the same person behind the Cincinnati tea dances held in recent years. Tea dances originally came about in the 1950s as a way for same-sex couples to discreetly dance and drink together in public under the guise of an afternoon tea party. Tea parties didn’t become mainstream in big cities until after the Stonewall Riots of 1969 as part of the gay rights movement. e|19 owner Richard Cooke reintroduced tea dances, called Sunday Tea, to Cincinnati in 2017, hosting social dancing events each month at various iconic spots around town. / Image: Catherine Viox // Published: 10.31.20
