Common Beer Company is a nano brewery that was inspired by a Father’s Day gift back in 2011. Mark Lortz received a home-brewing kit from Maggie, his daughter. The thoughtful gift ultimately led him on a journey of brewing discovery, starting with making extracts in his home, to eventually taking classes at Listermann Brewing Company and developing his own formulas and flavors with all-grain kits. He developed over 20 recipes within a few years. When positive feedback from tasters kept coming his way, he and Amy, his wife, opened Common Beer’s doors in October 2018. It’s continued to be quite a family affair ever since. ADDRESS: 126 E Main Street (45040) / Image: Katie Robinson, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 1.4.19

You can find Common Beer Company in Mason. It is solely a local tap room, meaning they have no plans to distribute their beer to stores. Mark says he wanted the brewery to become a “Mason destination” so the neighborhood could identify itself in the ever-growing brewery market. What sets them apart from others is their varietals of beers, utilizing multiple locally sourced flavors rather than focusing on just one. They have 12 beers on tap, ciders from Tin Cap Cidery in Wilmington, and select wines. They’ve harvested flavors such as honey and coffee, but they also plan to incorporate the pawpaw—the Ohio State fruit that grows wildly throughout the area, but very few people know about. / Image: Katie Robinson, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 1.4.19

Even the woodwork in Common Beer Company is local. A Lebanon business called Benner’s Woodworking created the beer flights, the bar top, and the beer tap handles in the bar. / Image: Katie Robinson, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 1.4.19
If you want a snack with your brew, Comets Pizza next door created a menu specially-made for Common Beer Co. You can place your order at the bar and the food is brought to you. On Sundays, a food truck caters to patrons. / Image: Katie Robinson, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 1.4.19

Community is a main tenant of Common Beer Company. With the bar being so cozy and inviting, the Lortz’s goal is for customers to come in and either know someone already or meet someone new. Mark and Amy say they plan on incorporating a local bike group into their brewery, and they also host a Sunday yoga class at 11 AM called Poses & Pints. / Image: Katie Robinson, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 1.4.19

Common Beer also sells Brewhouse Dog Bones. The company collects spent grains from breweries and employ adults and students with special needs to turn them into dog treats. The proceeds from the dog snacks all go towards the Stray Animal Adoption Program (SAAP). Did we mention Common’s back patio is dog-friendly? You’re asked to bring your fur babies. / Image: Katie Robinson, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 1.4.19
