Cartridge Brewing is a 10,000-square-foot taproom and restaurant located in a section of the former Peters Cartridge Factory alongside the Little Miami Bike Trail and the Little Miami River in Maineville. All of the beer is brewed on-site in a 15-barrel brewhouse and features a mixture of traditional old-world styles like lagers and English beers, as well as newer innovative brews like hoppy IPAs and sours. Cartridge also offers craft cocktails as well as a curated wine list. ADDRESS: 1411 Grandin Road (45039) / Image: Elizabeth A. Lowry // Published: 11.25.20

The building, which dates back to the 1800s, was first home to the Peters Cartridge Factory, which made ammunition and cartridge-loading machines for various endeavors including the Spanish-American War and World War I. It also produced ammo for World War II under the Remington Arms Company, served as a record pressing warehouse and storage facility for Columbia Records, housed barrels for Seagram's Distillery, and was a manufacturing location for LensCrafters up through the '70s. It sat abandoned for the past 50 years until Cartridge took over. / Image: Elizabeth A. Lowry // Published: 11.25.20

The brewery took nearly three years to come to fruition, as construction took place on an EPA Superfund site. It was also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, so there were a lot of hoops to jump through to acquire state tax credits and to make sure everything possible was preserved along the 14-acres of property. "There was just getting through a hurdle after another hurdle after another hurdle and having the perseverance to get through it," Lindsey Hackbarth, brand experience director and co-founder, says of the project. She co-owns the brewery with her husband and COO, Kyle Hackbarth. / Image: Elizabeth A. Lowry // Published: 11.25.20

Lindsey personally handled the interior details that honor the site’s past. This includes special touches such as the tap handles being giant shells with the Cartridge "C" on top, the handmade flight boards made to represent the ammo boxes of Peters Cartridge, the custom river tables throughout the brewery, as well as the "honoring the past wall" in the dining room that was a way to continue to share the story of the local landmark. "I think noticing those details will be fun for people when they come in here [to see] that we did not skimp on that and we did not do anything I think generic. The devil is in the details and we hit those out of the park," Lindsey says. / Image: Elizabeth A. Lowry // Published: 11.25.20
