Whenever I hear something being described as funky or eclectic, I'm immediately intrigued.
That said, it wasn't surprising when I'd find myself rubbernecking as I passed Allyn’s Cafe in Columbia-Tusculum. The building is hard to miss with its brightly-colored sign; the name Allyn’s sandwiched between the words Cajun and eclectic with an alligator menacingly perched atop all of it.
When I finally managed to Google the place, the results didn't disappoint: “Funky hangout offering Cajun fare, creative cocktails, craft beers, and wines by the bottle.” Ummm, count me in, please!
Allyn's describes itself as eclectic, which is 100% the right adjective for it. I mean, it’s pretty safe to say that whenever you see alligator on the menu, you’re in for an out-of-the-ordinary dining experience. After all, we are in Ohio. But even if you aren’t adventurous enough to try the alligator (admittedly, I was not), there are plenty of other delicious options from which to choose.
The cafe features an extensive menu, with everything from gator and quesadillas to burgers and salads. It even has several vegetarian and vegan options available, including vegan chili dogs, vegan chili con queso, and vegan jambalaya.
Let’s not forget about its bar, which, like its menu, is also on point. Allyn’s appreciates a good beer list just as much as any other Cincinnatian, so on top of having 50 bottled and canned beers available, it'll also do tap takeovers from time to time, featuring a variety of styles from different local breweries. It has wine and specialty drinks available, too, including its Bourbon Street Frozen Margarita and French Quarter Martini.
So even though we might be roughly 900 miles from Louisiana, we don’t have to travel that far to get a slice of the Bayou State. Lucky us!
