There really isn’t much to say about Rustic Refinery… except that it has really awesome furniture you must go check out now.
Like, seriously. Right now. Because if you wait, you could miss out on outrageously cool, uniquely handcrafted, one-of-a-kind pieces, like a pub table made out of an old jet engine or a dining table that can be hand-cranked to fit your party’s needs, whether you host a sit-down dinner for six or a standing-around-confabulating light-bites-and-cocktails soiree.
Much like proprietor James Allen, the storefront of this Oakley shop is unassuming (it took this writer a minute to notice it sandwiched between Maribelle’s and Salon Concepts in Oakley Center), but inside is a wealth of surprises. You’ll find a bevy of bookcases, workspaces, and dining tables, all handcrafted by Allen himself from reclaimed wood found around the Tri-state (and a supplier in Illinois).
The pieces come from the likes of old science desks and barn beams from the late 1800s — in fact, the wood Allen uses to craft his art is, on average, over a hundred years old, not only making each piece a conversation-starter but eco-friendly, too.
Allen, who grew up all over Europe, started Rustic Refinery out of his Anderson home in 2013, opening his storefront in Oakley Center two years ago. While most of his work is done residentially, you can also spot it in the tables at MadTree’s new Oakley location, as well as at Angry Orchard in Walden, NY. Of course, you could always stop by the showroom to see Allen’s magnificent work for yourself.
If, by chance, you don’t see anything you like, you can work directly with Allen to design custom furniture. Prices start at around $1,200 and can go upwards of $5,000 for the use of really rare wood. Custom work takes six to eight weeks for delivery, depending on design.
