Locally owned boutiques aren't very common in the area, which is why I’ve made it my mission to find them all. Luckily for me, I discovered The Pretty Pony Boutique less than 20 minutes south of Cincinnati in Crestview Hills, KY.
Cassie Kathman is the owner of the vibrant, stylish, and—most importantly—unique shop. After attending UK, she was inspired by the variety of boutiques in Lexington (trust me—those are great, too) and decided to bring her passion for fashion to the Tri-state.
She started the business in 2013, selling jewelry online from the comfort of her basement. Cassie had over 50 orders come in on her first day in operation, and when she added clothing into the mix, customers in the area wanted to try on outfits. Her home became the fitting room.
“I started having these little sales out of my house," she says, "and my poor husband had to move all of my furniture out of our dining room and living room and I would set up racks”
In 2014, The Pretty Pony Boutique found its first brick-and-mortar store in Fort Mitchell, KY, before eventually settling into the Crestview Hills Town Center just last year. Growing up around horses, it was only natural for her to name her store Pretty Pony.
“And we’re in Kentucky, so it kind of made sense,” she reasons. (Touché).
The shop's come a long way from jewelry and clothing, too. Pretty Pony also sells accessories, greeting cards, home décor, hand-made purses, wood signs, and just a little bit of everything. Around 75-100 different vendors from clothing markets all across the country are stocked in the shop.
Pretty Pony also takes pride in offering merchandise that's locally crafted, such as the Grainwell pieces they carry. Greeting cards, wine glasses, and coffee mugs all come from small vendors throughout the United States because Cassie values helping other small business owners.
Above all, Cassie knew she wanted to put her customers first. Not only when it comes to providing quality products at affordable prices, but also when it comes to forming friendly relationships with everyone that walks through her doors.
She explains, “I started the business based on not necessarily gaining customers, but gaining lifelong friends I tell my staff: We’re not here to push sales, we’re here to make somebody’s day.”
Her shop is proof that fashioning valued friendships is a profitable business model. And selling cute outfits doesn’t hurt either.
