The Children’s Theatre Has Been Giving Young People A Reason To Love The Stage Since 1924

It’s common knowledge that Cincinnati is a city with a rich arts scene. And for those of us who take advantage of Cincy's offerings, there’s no shortage of culture to absorb. As a kid, I have fond memories of Saturday afternoons at the Taft, where I’d enjoy performances by The Children’s Theatre (TCT, for short), followed by a visit to UDF where I’d (no doubt) choose cookies ’n cream to cap a day well spent.

Though the TCT is geared toward audiences of children, make no mistake, the acting and performances are professional grade. That’s often a common misconception about the theater. “All of our MainStage productions feature adult actors in adult roles, and child actors in children’s roles. These actors are audition-based and are paid,” Julia Fowler (Marketing Coordinator for TCT) explained.

We recently spoke with Fowler and toured the TCT’s new(ish) Red Bank facility to get a broader scope of the background and offerings of this multi-faceted organization. Here’s the quick n’ dirty on what you need to know...

ESTABLISHED IN 1924 by the Junior League of Cincinnati, The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati is the oldest professional theatre for young audiences in the nation.

OVER 107,000 PATRONS see the MainStage productions with an additional 60,000 via the Touring Division.

THE TAFT THEATRE continues to host the MainStage performances.

IN DECEMBER OF 2015, TCT opened a secondary facility which includes a smaller 150-person theater. And on top of the theater space, the Red Bank facility has eight stunning classrooms for vocal, dance, and acting classes for kids to experience through their TCT Academy classes and summer camps.

THE THEATER SEASON runs October through April for the MainStage, while the Tour Season runs September through May.

FOR THE FIRST TIME last year, thanks to the new theater space, TCT was able to offer a summer production. It was a six-week run of Dr. Seuss’s “The Cat in the Hat.”

And now, in case you haven’t already, it’s time to scroll back to the top to view the new Red Bank facility.
