From February 8 to May 3, 2020, N.C. Wyeth: New Perspectives will be on display at the Taft Museum in their Fifth Third Gallery. Wyeth (1882-1945), a renowned painter and illustrator, is known for his work on Treasure Island, The Last of the Mohicans, and several other popular works during his lifetime. Balanced on a tightrope between being a commercial illustrator and a fine artist, Wyeth's pieces at the Taft highlight his versatility throughout his lifetime, which is loosely organized chronologically. / Image: Phil Armstrong, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 2.9.20
Around 50 paintings are included in New Perspectives. Having studied at the Howard Pyle School of Art in Delaware, Wyeth's love of Native Americans and the American West informed much of his early work. His commissioned paintings often showcased an intense amount of drama, movement, and adventure. Later in life, after purchasing a studio space in Pennsylvania, Wyeth delved into fine art and refined his approach to painting. One way in which his fine art paintings differed from that of his commercial work was through a concept he learned from Italian painter Giovanni Segantini (1858-1899) in which he placed unmixed colors on the canvas, forcing the viewer's eyes to do the mixing from a proper distance. / Image: Phil Armstrong, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 2.9.20
New Perspectives was co-organized by the Brandywine River Museum of Art in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and the Portland Museum of Art in Maine. It is showing at the Taft Museum of Art from February 8 to May 3, 2020. / Image: Phil Armstrong, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 2.9.20
N.C. Wyeth's last name is synonymous with great American painters. Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009), another talented and popular realist painter, was his son. Jamie Wyeth (1946)-present), a contemporary American realist painter, is N.C. Wyeth's grandson and Andrew Wyeth's son. / Image: Phil Armstrong, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 2.9.20

'Star Wars' creator George Lucas and 'Game of Thrones' author George R. R. Martin were both inspired by Wyeth's work when they imagined their own stories. / Image: Phil Armstrong, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 2.9.20
Treasure Island is arguably N.C. Wyeth's most popular, enduring work. He was commissioned to produce 17 illustrations for the book in 1911, catapulting his career. / Image: Phil Armstrong, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 2.9.20
In Funeral for a Fisherman (1939), Wyeth worked with a chemist to produce a bright blue-green hue that intensifies the drama and surrealism of the scene he painted. He used this special hue in multiple pieces, several of which can be seen in the gallery.{ }/ Image: Phil Armstrong, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 2.9.20

After his parents passed away, Wyeth painted My Mother (1920). In it, his brushstrokes are loose, creating a general haziness to the piece. One interpretation of this style is that Wyeth intended to paint a memory, which is never perfectly clear. The light coming in from the window highlights the clock on the wall, perhaps giving the viewer a sense of passing time. / Image: Phil Armstrong, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 2.9.20
