Genevieve Lavalle is the artist behind BlackOlive Art—a brand that makes tufted tapestries, pom pom earrings, and other creative hand made items. The Iowa-transplant moved to Cincinnati in 2013 and discovered her love of tufting and fiber arts after taking a weaving class at Xavier University. / Image courtesy of Genevieve Lavalle of BlackOlive Art // Published: 12.26.20

“[Tufting’s] a form of rug-making with basically an electric punch needle,” Genevieve explains. “It’s a type of fiber arts, and it’s nice because typically when you see someone knitting or weaving, you think about how many hours and hours it takes, and tufting is a slightly sped-up version of that practice.” / Image courtesy of Genevieve Lavalle of BlackOlive Art // Published: 12.26.20

The name of BlackOlive Art is inspired by her dog, Olive, who she adopted four years ago. “When I’m sitting in my studio working, she’s just by my side the entire time,” says Genevieve. “She goes everywhere with me. We go to the post office, we go to the coffee shop, we go to breweries. She’s just my little partner.” / Image courtesy of Genevieve Lavalle of BlackOlive Art // Published: 12.26.20

The smiley face designs came about during the start of the pandemic. At one point, she was quarantining at home and going a little stir crazy when she started tufting a bunch of smiley faces. She says she was sick of being stuck inside and that the smiley faces just naturally started to take shape as if they were a response to the dread of isolation. / Image courtesy of Genevieve Lavalle of BlackOlive Art // Published: 12.26.
