How A Cincy-Based Furniture Company Is Making Moving Infinitely Easier

Imagine two moving scenarios:

  1. It’s a scorching hot summer day and you’re helping your friend move into his/her 4th floor apartment, which is only accessible via a narrow staircase without air conditioning on one side of an inner-city Italianate.

  2. It’s a freezing cold winter day, and as you help your friend move into his/her new apartment at the top of some exterior stairs, you’re praying you don’t slip on the ice as your hands go numb from holding a dresser.

In either case, moving is misery-inducing when trying to haul cumbersome couches and weighty wardrobes . Thankfully, Slim Furniture is here to help.

Slim Furniture specializes in modular furniture that’s lightweight, (seemingly) effortless to assemble, and easy to move. The units don’t require tools to assemble, and most pieces begin with the same basic design: four interlocking wooden boards fastened together with a strap.

Add a foam cushion on top and it’s an ottoman. Add some steel rails with some cushions, and you have a chair. Two chairs together easily convert into a love seat. You get the picture.

Michael Blair, the founder, worked for a moving company to help pay his way through art school. He found carrying cumbersome, heavy furniture up winding staircases to be too much of a hassle, and eventually developed Slim Furniture, with his father, to alleviate the stress of the painstaking process.

The company officially began in 2012, with the production of its furniture line.

Simply put: individuals who have no intention of staying put – students, traveling professionals, and anyone else living the nomad lifestyle.

Once broken down, Slim's furniture easily fits in the backseat of a Volkswagen Golf or other small car. Whether it's outdoor furniture, a chaise lounge, or a storage-packed couch, Slim’s stuff is designed to come along for your next adventure without slowing you down.
