Before & After: Home Renovations For The Holidays

Moving into a new house isn't always easy. There's no 'new car smell' to a new house, ya know? Just lots of empty space. Then the holidays roll around and relatives come to stay and for whatever reason your new home doesn't have that warm, personal feel - it doesn't feel like yours.
That's a problem neither the Corbus family nor the Schuermann family have. When they bought their new homes through the Finn Team, a Coldwell Banker West Shell partner, they did so with that holiday hospitality in mind.

After putting down some hardwood floors and knocking out a few walls, these homes are prepared for anything and everything the season has to offer.

The Schuermann Family - Alpine Terrace

"The Schuermann family had reached out to us and said that they may be interested in moving if they could find a home with a nice view," says Rick Finn, Finn Team listing specialist. "We do a lot of business in (Hyde Park/Mount Lookout), and were able to tell them about this home before it was listed and it had a fantastic wooded view."

"We didn't want to go far, but we wanted more space and a home with a nice view," says Steve Schuermann. "Rick told us about this home before it was even on the market and we loved the yard and view looking out the back of the house."

As for the Schuermann family's new home as a holiday hotspot, Steve says: "We have had one Thanksgiving here so far and this home works well for our family holidays. The fifth bedroom/full bath is great for my wife's out-of-town relatives, the open floor plan offers great flow between the kitchen/family room/outdoor space with larger groups of people, and the out-of-town nephews loved the lower level with full bath when visiting Cincinnati."

The Corbus Family - Herschel Avenue

"The Corbus family was looking for a good value in the Hyde Park area that they could renovate to their tastes," says Finn. "Knowing the market well and the history of the property, we were able to get this home for them at a great price. They did an amazing job on the renovation, and we hope they have many happy memories there."

"All of our previous home purchases were focused on resale and flipping it eventually as an investment," says the Corbus family. "This was the first home we bought have after having kids, and that made it much more difficult to buy. We cared about value, but also felt it was a very important decision because we were choosing the house our children would be growing up in. We had very specific ideas of what we wanted, but on this big of a purchase, both from a financial and sentimental standpoint, it was very helpful and comforting to have the Finn Team helping us with the purchase."

The Corbus family wanted a home that had enough space for relatives and overnight guests and that they could add value to through renovations. In their new home, they combined the dining room and a small galley kitchen by knocking out a wall. They also added new hardwood floors, custom library bookcase, and a new fireplace. Upstairs they put in a new master bedroom with walk-in closets.

"Since we got a good value that we could renovate, we were able to afford a house with more square footage," says the Corbus family, who further note that the house is now great for hosting guests this time of year. "We just had friends and family stay with us for the Browns-Bengals game in Cincinnati, and we now we have people travel to Cincinnati for holidays so our kids can remember the holidays in our home. Because of this house we are able to host family for get-togethers and overnight, and with all of our family living out of town that has allowed us to create family traditions in Cincinnati."
